About the role

Why this role matters

  • In this role, you will directly shape the future of oncology care in Japan. By bridging early pipeline opportunities, BD evaluations, and access/pricing strategies, you will ensure that innovative therapies reach patients faster and more sustainably. This is a unique opportunity to influence both Japan’s strategic direction and global portfolio decisions, while expanding your expertise across the full spectrum of portfolio management.

Objective

The Portfolio Lead will play a pivotal role in shaping JOBU’s oncology portfolio strategy with a dual focus:

Pipeline & BD opportunities – evaluating new products in development and external business development opportunities from a Japan perspective, and integrating these into global discussions. Access & Pricing – leading access and pricing strategies across both pipeline and marketed assets to ensure patients can benefit from innovation in a timely and sustainable way.

This role is distinct from Marketing, which oversees launched products; instead, the Portfolio Lead will ensure early-stage strategic planning, external opportunity assessment, and market access considerations are fully integrated. By balancing these perspectives, the Portfolio Lead contributes directly to both Japan and global portfolio decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

1. Portfolio Strategy & Integration

  • Partner with Head of Portfolio Management to define and execute Japan oncology portfolio strategy, covering pipeline assets and BD opportunities.

  • Evaluate BD opportunities from the Japan perspective and integrate insights into global assessments.

  • Coordinate with global functions to ensure Japanese market needs are represented in global decision-making.

  • Ensure portfolio coverage across NPP and Access/Pricing, dynamically adapting scope depending on business priorities.

2. New Product Planning & BD Evaluation

  • Develop disease area strategies, including unmet needs, patient segmentation, competitive landscape, and commercial risk/benefit assessment.

  • Lead Japan-side input into global BD opportunity evaluations, ensuring alignment with local healthcare environment and market needs.

  • Provide commercial perspective for pre-commercialization planning and lifecycle strategy.

3. Market Access & Pricing

  • Develop and implement access and pricing strategies for both pipeline and marketed products in close collaboration with Global PVPA and JPBU Access teams.

  • Monitor healthcare policy trends and anticipate changes, providing strategic recommendations to leadership.

  • Note: Direct price negotiation with authorities is out of scope, as this is handled by JPBU Access team

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Intelligence Gathering

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs, OTAU, Regulatory, Marketing, and BD teams to enable holistic decision-making.

  • Gather and analyze market intelligence on pipeline assets, pricing, access, and healthcare policy.

  • Facilitate portfolio governance meetings (e.g., JOPM) to align stakeholders and enable informed decisions.

5. Talent Development & Organizational Capability

  • Mentor, coach, and develop team members, fostering enterprise mindset and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Build organizational capabilities to ensure versatility across NPP and Access/Pricing areas.

  • Support professional growth of team members by enabling exposure to both early-stage portfolio planning and access strategy.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business, or related field required.

  • MBA or advanced degree preferred.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years in pharmaceutical or healthcare industry roles.

  • Experience in oncology product strategy, NPP, BD evaluation, or access/pricing.

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and financial modeling skills (e.g., NPV, ROI).

  • Proven ability to integrate cross-functional perspectives and influence stakeholders at local and global levels.

  • Adaptability to cover multiple functional areas (NPP and Access/Pricing) depending on business needs.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Fluent in Japanese and business-level English.

Leadership & Mindset

  • Enterprise-minded, collaborative, and inclusive leadership style.

  • Strong comfort with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and dynamic environments.

  • Ability to coach and inspire team members while enabling organizational flexibility.

  • Excited to broaden expertise across the full scope of portfolio management.
