Global Humanitarian Crisis Leave Policy

We are excited to announce we have launched a new global policy enabling employees to volunteer to support humanitarian crises.

Over the last year, we’ve had requests from employees from all over the world to support humanitarian efforts in response to crises, which is what inspired this policy.

A humanitarian crisis is defined by the United Nations as a singular event or a series of events that are threatening in terms of health, safety or well-being of a community or large group of people. Examples of humanitarian crises include armed conflicts, epidemics, famine, natural disasters, energy crises and other major emergencies. This new policy will allow a consistent approach for how our employees can support our communities in the face of crises like these, providing a global standard for this type of leave.

This new leave will be available for all employees to apply for in three scenarios:

1. Volunteering to address a humanitarian crisis (up to five days)

Employees wishing to participate in community volunteering that addresses humanitarian crises can apply for up to 5 working days of paid leave.

2. Active engagement with a recognized non-governmental organization (NGO) addressing a humanitarian crisis (up to 10 days)

Employees wishing to have more active engagement with a recognized not-for-profit organization that is working to address humanitarian crises can apply for up to 10 working days of paid leave. These requests must be accompanied by a formal letter of engagement that is provided by the not-for-profit organization.

3. Healthcare professionals who respond to a call to volunteer in the healthcare sector (additional leave based on people leader and HR approval)

Takeda is proud to have many licensed healthcare professionals within the organization who, at times of crisis or specific need, may wish to respond to a call to volunteer within the healthcare sector. These Takeda colleagues are eligible to apply for leave that goes beyond the paid 10 working days of leave.
