Where Purpose Meets Rigor: Oncology Careers at Takeda

For oncology talent exploring their next move across R&D and Commercial, Takeda offers something distinctive: work that is deeply meaningful, highly collaborative and unapologetically rigorous.

The science is complex. Evidence evolves. Priorities shift. Teams are expected to make disciplined decisions, move with urgency and collaborate across functions to help bring new possibilities forward for patients with significant unmet need. But for many people here, that is exactly the point.

In Takeda Oncology, colleagues are trusted with meaningful challenges, supported as they grow and united by a shared purpose: helping patients live longer, better lives. As Sean O’Shea, Area Sales Director, puts it, “Oncology isn’t easy… one of the values that we hold really dear is perseverance… you gotta have that ability to stick and stay steady.”

You’ll be surrounded by people who raise the bar… It’s an exciting moment to join. There’s real momentum and a real need, which means opportunity… to help turn strong science into meaningful impact for patients facing hard-to-treat cancers.

A Mission That Feels Personal

What makes this work meaningful can take many forms.

For Senior Scientific Director of Luekemia, Evan Reddick, it’s deeply personal. “I lost my mother to breast cancer about 20 years ago… if my contributions help even one patient get more time to hold the people they love, then I’m doing work that truly matters.” When that purpose is paired with real responsibility, there is an opportunity to do something incredible. Evan is looking forward to influencing “how we deliver both on what we’ve already approved and what’s coming next… we’re entering a window where several therapies could make it into clinical practice. That’s a big moment.”

For others, Like Sean, leading people is what makes every day special. “I’m at my best when I can help others, support others, invest in others.” a sentiment shared by many leaders at Takeda. “People want to be cared for, valued, supported.” He believes in making an investment in the individual and getting to know people for who they are in addition to work they do leading to stronger performance and ultimately outcomes for patients.

Collaboration That Helps Turn Science Into Impact

In oncology, progress does not happen in silos. It takes close partnership across research, development, medical, access, analytics, training, marketing and commercial teams to move from promising science to real-world patient impact.

That cross-functional model is critical to delivering for patients. Sean shared examples of when projects were most successful, recalling “Sales has to work with market access, insights and analytics, training, marketing… there was no other way we could have brought that product to market given the time constraints… other than working together hand in hand, caring for people, supporting people.”

That same spirit is prevalent across teams. Meena Subramanyam, VP Global Program Leader, in R&D describes Takeda as “a highly collaborative organization with a strong expectation of clarity, integrity and follow through.” It’s the type of environment where “you’ll get to do really exciting, innovative science with real accountability where your work is tied to measurable progress and patient impact.” For candidates seeking oncology careers where collaboration is real and where the work connects directly to outcomes, that matters.

Values That Show Up When Decisions Get Hard

“Impact comes from better choices” is a belief strong held by Meena. At Takeda, our values are deeply engrained in our work and often serve as a guide in our decision-making, especially when the stakes are high.

Jennifer Elliott, Head of Global Medical Affairs - Lung, shared one of the clearest examples: “We promised a confirmatory trial… and unfortunately that trial did not meet its primary endpoint. So… the withdrawal… was something that we did have to do. However… we really went out of our way to ensure that patients that were already on therapy… were able to stay on drug for as long as physicians thought they would benefit.”

This kind of environment can be demanding. Teams are expected to follow the data, confront ambiguity honestly and make choices that hold up scientifically and ethically. “Priorities can shift as evidence evolves, so it rewards people who are comfortable operating with uncertainty while still driving crisp decisions”, says Meena. Living by our values is not optional. It is part of what the work requires and helps drive us forward in all that we do.

Work That Asks a Lot — and Gives a Lot Back

Takeda Oncology is a place for people who want to be stretched. The expectations are high, the work is complex and the standards are real. But so is the opportunity to grow, contribute and make an impact alongside thoughtful colleagues across R&D and Commercial.

For candidates looking at oncology jobs, that is the full picture: meaningful challenges, fast learning, cross-functional teamwork and a culture grounded in values and patient impact. As Meena said, this is work with “real accountability.” As Jennifer’s experience shows, it is also work where patients remain at the center, even when the path forward is difficult.

If you are looking for an oncology career where purpose is personal, collaboration is essential and rigor is part of how better outcomes happen for patients, you’re going to want to explore our open roles.
